Sources: Green Bay Packers To Unveil New Throwback Helmets This Season

According to multiple sources, the Green Bay Packers are set to unveil a new helmet design that will be worn with their 1950s throwback uniforms for at least one game this season.

Details are limited at this time, but our sources indicate that the retail versions of the helmets will come at an increased price point compared to other authentic, replica, or mini helmets available to the general public.

That suggests the Packers will not simply add their iconic “G” logo and helmet stripes to another colour shell, like they did for the white alternate helmets they debuted last season.

Instead, it appears Green Bay is on the verge of wearing the first airbrushed helmet in NFL history, one that mimics the yellow leather helmets the franchise wore in 1950.

The Packers currently remove the decals and stripes from their standard gold helmets and swap their green facemasks for gray to complete the 1950s throwback uniforms, which debuted in 2021.

The uniforms feature green jerseys with gold numbers and two gold stripes on the sleeves, green pants with a single gold stripe down the sides and green socks with stripes that match the sleeves.

Green Bay was unable to introduce a different shell at that time, however, as the league’s one-helmet rule was still in effect. Although it was ultimately scrapped ahead of the 2022 season, it paved the way for teams to wear three different shells.

That rule also forced the Packers to scrap the plain brown helmets they wore with their 1929 throwback uniforms from 2010-11, which were also supposed to mimic leather helmets, and use their standard gold helmets, sans decals, instead from 2013-14.

Similarly, the Washington Redskins wore hydro-dipped helmets in 2012 that featured a faux-leather design, along with their 1937 throwback uniforms, but switched to their standard burgundy lids once the rule took effect.

The potential for airbrushed helmets instantly brings to mind the “leather” helmets that the Illinois Fighting Illini wore as part of Memorial Stadium’s 100th anniversary last fall.

They included details that were unmatched by the Packers and Redskins’ previous leather helmet-inspired designs, such as straps, stitching, holes and shading, as well as other unique touches.

That said, the Packers will join the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders in unveiling a new alternate or throwback helmet this season.

There will also be new helmet designs for the eight AFC East and NFC West teams participating in the NFL’s new “Rivalries” uniform series, including the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.

The addition of a new helmet to an existing throwback design evokes the Browns pairing their white alternate helmets, introduced in 2023, with their 1946 throwback uniforms, unveiled in 2021.

Cleveland, much like Green Bay, initially swapped the stripes and facemask colour and added numbers to the side of its standard orange helmets to complete the throwback look.
