Everything old is new again for Italian Serie A club AS Roma as they start the countdown to their 100th anniversary.
In a message to supporters posted to the club’s website this week, the club’s owners announced that a new version of the historic club crest would be gradually implemented, although no concrete timeline was given.
“The historic ASR crest [is] a symbol that embodies the soul of this Club. This decision, taken with deep respect for our tradition and in response to the heartfelt wishes of our supporters, is a tribute to Roma’s identity. It reflects our belief that the symbols of a Club matter, and that honoring our roots is essential to building our future.”
— Dan and Ryan Friedkin, AS Roma owners
The new version of the crest uses Roma’s traditional colours of carmine red and golden yellow in a shield shape. The bottom half of the shield has gold “ASR” monogram on a red background. The top half is a scene from the myth of the founding of Rome, with a female wolf nursing twins Romulus and Remus after they were thrown into the River Tiber on the orders of their uncle, Amulius.

A variation of this crest has been used by AS Roma throughout much of its history. At times, the club has used just the monogram or, from 1979 to 1997, a wolf’s head inside a circle known as the lupetto crest. The most recent version of the crest had the scene with Romulus, Remus and the wolf on the top half of the shield, while “ROMA” and “1927” were spelled out in the bottom half.

In their message, the Friedkins also promised supporters a new stadium, “a home worthy of our fans, a legacy for the next generations, and a gift from the Club to this eternal city. A majestic new colosseum, one we promise to deliver.” ASR currently shares the Stadio Olimpico in Roma with SS Lazio. The Friedkins also recently purchased Everton FC of the English Premier League, which is set to move into their new grounds on the Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool, Hill Dickinson Stadium, for the start of the 2025-26 season.
AS Roma opens its 2025-26 Serie A season at home against Bologna FC on Sunday, August 24.
