Tampa Bay Buccaneers To Wear Creamsicle Throwback Uniforms Against Atlanta Falcons

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced game themes for their 50th season on Tuesday and revealed they’ll wear their creamsicle throwback uniforms during their Thursday Night Football matchup with the Atlanta Falcons on Dec. 11.

“As we celebrate our 50th season, we are committed to honoring the past, highlighting the present and laying the groundwork for the next exciting era of Buccaneers football,” chief operating officer Brian Ford said in a statement.

The Buccaneers originally wore the uniforms, which feature a white helmet with Bucco Bruce decals on the sides, fluorescent orange jerseys with red accents and white pants with a traditional striping pattern, from their inaugural season in 1976 until a significant redesign in 1997.

They went an NFL-worst 100-233-1 during that span, including an infamous 0-26 start, so it’s fitting that Tampa Bay is 0-2 in the uniforms since they were reintroduced in 2023, including a 20-6 loss to the Detroit Lions that season and a 31-26 loss to the Falcons in 2024.

The Buccaneers also went 1-3 in the uniforms from 2009-12 before the NFL implemented its one-helmet rule in 2013. The look was shelved for 10 seasons as a result, with Tampa Bay only being allowed to wear its pewter shell, but returned when the league relaxed that rule.

Interestingly, teams are now permitted to wear alternate or throwback uniforms in as many as four games each season, up from three last year. But the Buccaneers have historically only worn throwback uniforms once each season and that appears to be the case again this year.

That said, it’s worth noting the designer of their 50th season logos – which will be worn as a patch on their red home, white road and creamsicle throwback jerseys – teased that the team could also reveal a road version of the throwback uniforms.

Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, though it would make sense to introduce white throwback jerseys this year since Tampa Bay wore all-white road uniforms in every regular season game in 1976 and limited the creamsicle orange jerseys to the preseason.

The Buccaneers have noted their Sept. 21 home opener against the New York Jets will also be a celebration of their 50th season, honoring iconic moments and legends “who helped shape the franchise.” If there was any game on the schedule to wear white throwbacks, it would be that.
