With Canada Day just around the corner, teams in the Canadian Football League are putting their national pride on display.
Starting this week, all nine CFL teams will begin sporting a Canadian flag on the front of their home, away and alternate jerseys. The flag comes in the form of a small embroidered patch that will sit on the player’s left shoulder, above any sponsor patch on that side and above the seam separating the sleeve from the body of the jersey.
Situated on the front of the jersey near the left shoulder area, the flag will be worn on all home, away and alternate jerseys as a proud reminder of the home of the CFL, with its uniquely Canadian rules and its time-honoured traditions rooted in the fabric of the country.

“We are a league that is made in Canada and played in Canada. This flag is a symbol of unity, pride and the deep connection we share with our fans from coast to coast to coast,” CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston said on the league’s website. “This emblem represents more than just a country; it represents the spirit of our game and the communities that support it.”
This is not the first appearance of the Maple Leaf on CFL uniforms, though. Teams have been putting Canadian flags on the backs of their helmets since the early 2000s. The Montréal Alouettes also sport a Quebec provincial flag on their helmets.

The CFL’s WestJet Canada Day Weekend gets underway tonight (Thursday, June 26) with the Edmonton Elks travelling to Winnipeg to take on the Blue Bombers. Other games over the week include:
- Montréal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Friday, June 27)
- BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (Saturday, June 28)
- Toronto Argonauts at Ottawa REDBLACKS (Friday, June 29)
