The Atlanta Falcons announced on Tuesday they will wear their 1966 throwback uniforms in three games this season, including Oct. 13 against the Buffalo Bills, Dec. 11 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dec. 29 against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Falcons, who are celebrating their 60th season this fall, originally wore red helmets from their inception in 1966 until 1990, when they switched to black helmets on a full-time basis. The helmets were joined by black jerseys and white pants until 1971.
These uniforms were also worn as a throwback from 2009 until the NFL implemented its one-helmet rule in 2013, though Atlanta partially revived the design in 2016, blending eras by pairing their standard black lids and throwback decals with the 1966 jerseys, pants and socks.
The league then relaxed the aforementioned rule in 2022, allowing the Falcons to reintroduce the red shells, which feature a gray facemask, vintage logos on the sides and a stripe down the center that borrows its colors from in-state schools Georgia and Georgia Tech.
Atlanta is 6-2 in the uniforms since the red helmets replaced the 1990s-era design, including 3-0 last season, with victories over the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 29, Buccaneers on Oct. 3 and New York Giants on Dec. 22.
The Dec. 11 trip to Tampa Bay is especially notable, as it will mark the first time the Falcons will wear the throwback uniforms on the road. They’ll also go head-to-head with the home version of the Buccaneers’ creamsicle throwback uniforms that evening.
