The Cleveland Browns confirmed our report from May by unveiling new brown alternate helmets on Wednesday afternoon that will be paired with their all-brown Color Rush uniforms, which haven’t been worn since 2022.
The matte brown “Alpha Dawg” helmets feature a brown facemask and two orange stripes down the center, mimicking the design that’s stitched inside the collar of their home brown, white road and Color Rush jerseys. The stripes were also on their 2018-19 Color Rush pants.
“We’re excited about this new alternate helmet and the ode it pays to the rich history of the colour brown as part of our organization, switching it up from our iconic orange helmets,” executive vice president J.W. Johnson said.
This marks the first brown helmet in franchise history, as Cleveland wore plain white leather helmets from its inception in 1946 until 1950, when the team introduced a solid orange alternate design that became its full-time look in 1952, albeit with a white stripe down the center.
The Browns tinkered with the orange helmets in subsequent seasons, adding a grey facemask in 1954, brown jersey numbers on the sides in 1957 and their current striping pattern in 1960. They then removed the numbers in 1961.
Cleveland wore white facemasks from 1975 to 1995, as well as upon its return as an expansion franchise from 1999 to 2005. There was another stint with a gray facemask from 2006 to 2014, as well as a brown facemask from 2015 to 2023, with white becoming the standard facemask last season.
The Browns also introduced white alternate helmets in 2023, which have been paired with their 1946 throwback uniforms for the last two seasons. The white helmets feature the Browns’ current striping pattern and a brown facemask.
Cleveland now becomes the sixth team in the league with three different helmet shells at its disposal, joining the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, though the Green Bay Packers will soon follow suit.
The Browns will wear their new all-brown uniforms three times this season: September 21 against the Packers, October 19 against the Miami Dolphins, and December 7 against the Tennessee Titans. That leaves one undetermined game for the aforementioned white alternate helmets and 1946 throwback uniforms.
