Numbers on Caps, Custom Bats as MLB Celebrates Players’ Weekend 2025

All MLB players, coaches, and managers will wear colourful numbers on the side of their caps this weekend, August 15-17, 2025.

The numbers are just one part of the league’s annual Players’ Weekend, which is returning for all 45 scheduled games set for this weekend, including the Little League Classic. Other elements include relaxed on-field equipment rules in order to allow players the opportunity to showcase their styles and personalities.

The most visible change is these numbers on the caps, a style that is now in its second straight year for Players’ Weekend. The digit designs return unchanged: each number from 0 through 9 has its youth-inspired illustration style, with unique shapes and colours applied consistently across all 30 clubs. Team caps otherwise remain standard in base colour, logos, and materials, though during Sunday night’s Little League Classic, a special event patch will be added alongside the number.

Personalized gear is the other key on-field element we’ll see this weekend. Players are permitted (and encouraged) to use custom bats and cleats, many of which will be built around tributes to their home countries and hometowns, alma maters, first responders, nicknames, favourite characters, family members, and foundations. Using past Players’ Weekends as a guide, we can expect to see a wide mix of painted bats, as well as flag motifs, school colour treatments, and cause ribbons worked into footwear. Selected items will be made available for auction with proceeds directed to charities chosen by the players.

Players’ Weekend first debuted in 2017, with its original 2017–19 run featuring special uniforms for all 30 teams, including players wearing nicknames on the back instead of their last name. The first two editions leaned into colourful, Little League-inspired pullovers; 2019 infamously flipped to all-white or all-black sets, the intention there was to put 100% of the focus on the custom elements each player added to their equipment set that day. The event paused from 2020–23 before returning last year with a focus on cap-side numbers and custom equipment.

The 2025 edition of Players’ Weekend wraps up on Sunday, August 17, at 7:10 p.m. ET with the Little League Classic in Williamsport, where the New York Mets face the Seattle Mariners.

LITTLE LEAGUE CLASSIC LOGO HISTORY

The Little League Classic has used three distinct logo styles over the course of the eight events that have been held.

The first style, used from 2017-19, placed emphasis on the keystone shape, which has been used as a symbol of Little League Baseball since 1949. The two competing team logos were placed at the bottom of the keystone shape with their team colours incorporated.

In 2021, the logo design changed with a more wordmark-heavy design featuring lowercase “i”‘s amongst otherwise uppercase lettering. The two team cap logos were again included at the bottom within the year of the event.

After three years, the logo got another update for 2024, as the league overall began to implement a mild templating of their event logos. The official MLB colours were used as well as one of the approved league typefaces, with the two team logos again included, but now recoloured to match the MLB colour scheme.
