Just as we predicted this summer, the Arizona State Sun Devils will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their 1975 football team by wearing throwback uniforms during their Oct. 18 game against Texas Tech.
Those Sun Devils, who will be inducted into the ASU Hall of Fame that weekend, finished the 1975 season at 12-0 overall and No. 2 in the major polls – the highest final ranking in school history – after defeating Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl.
The off-white jerseys are almost identical to what Arizona State wore in that three-point victory, with maroon numbers, a Sparky sunburst patch on the shoulders and a classic maroon-gold-maroon striping pattern on the sleeves.
The same goes for the gold helmets, which include an “ASU” sunburst logo on the sides, a single maroon stripe down the center and a gray facemask. That was the only season this version of the logo was worn, as the colors were then flipped from 1976-79.
The uniforms are complete with gold pants, though they have just one solid maroon stripe down the sides instead of two. That, the Big XII logo and adidas manufacturer marks are the only adjustments from the original design.
The Sun Devils previously honored the 1975 team by wearing throwback uniforms in a loss to UCLA in 2020. That look featured maroon jerseys with faux-mesh numbers, the Sparky sunburst logo on the sleeves and stripes on the baselayer, which only a few players wore.
There was also a “PT*42” shield at the base of the collar in honor of late linebacker and Army Ranger Pat Tillman, but that is notably absent from this year’s design. Instead, “Kush” is written on the inside of the back collar as a nod to then-head coach Frank Kush.
This marks one of two alternate and/or throwback uniforms for Arizona State this season, as the Sun Devils teased two unreleased designs when they revealed their new home and road looks this offseason.
A subsequent retail leak showed the other will be a gold jersey that follows the same template as their “core” uniforms, with a maroon “Arizona State” wordmark above maroon numbers and a sublimated sun ray design on the sleeves.
