Cleveland Browns To Debut Brown “Alpha Dawg” Alternate Helmets On Sunday

The Cleveland Browns will debut their new brown “Alpha Dawg” alternate helmets during Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, which kicks off at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.

The matte brown helmets, which will be paired with their all-brown Color Rush uniforms that haven’t been worn since 2022, feature a brown facemask and two orange stripes down the center, mimicking the design that’s stitched inside the collar of their home brown, white road and Color Rush jerseys.

This marks the first brown helmet in franchise history, as Cleveland wore plain white leather helmets from its inception in 1946 until 1950, when the team introduced a solid orange alternate design that became its full-time look in 1952, albeit with a white stripe down the center.

The Browns tinkered with the orange helmets in subsequent seasons, adding a gray facemask in 1954, brown jersey numbers on the sides in 1957 and their current striping pattern in 1960. They then removed the jersey numbers in 1961.

Cleveland wore white facemasks from 1975-95, as well as upon its return as an expansion franchise from 1999-2005. There was another stint with a gray facemask from 2006-14, as well as a brown facemask from 2015-23, with white becoming the standard facemask last season.

The Browns then introduced white alternate helmets in 2023, which have been paired with their 1946 throwback uniforms for the last two seasons. The white helmets feature their current striping pattern and a brown facemask.

Cleveland is one of eight teams in the league with three different helmet shells at its disposal, joining the Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks.

The Browns will wear their brown helmets two more times this season, including Oct. 19 against the Dolphins and Dec. 7 against the Tennessee Titans. That leaves one undetermined game for the aforementioned white alternate helmets and 1946 throwback uniforms.
