The San Francisco 49ers will wear the road version of their 1994 throwback uniforms for the first and only time this season when they host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX.
The uniforms were originally worn as part of the NFL’s league-wide celebration of its 75th season and are based on what the 49ers looked like in 1955, with gold helmets that feature a vintage logo on the sides, white jerseys with drop shadow numbers and three stripes on the sleeves and white pants with black and red stripes down the sides.
They ended up being a good luck charm, too, as San Francisco wore the home version throughout the playoffs on the way to a victory over the then-San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX. The 49ers reintroduced the road version as a throwback option in 2018 and then added the home version to their uniform rotation in 2021.

San Francisco will look to improve upon its 6-4 record in the road version of the throwback uniforms on Sunday. Meanwhile, they’re 5-5 in the home version, which will return against the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 19 and Chicago Bears on Dec. 28.
Interestingly, the 49ers attempted to wear white at home in last year’s game against the Cardinals due to a heatwave in Santa Clara, but that request was denied. They instead switched to the home version of their 1994 throwback uniforms since they feature white pants.
That also impacted their late-season matchup with the Detroit Lions, when they were forced to wear their standard home uniforms after previously announcing plans to wear the home version of the throwback uniforms, as they had already reached the limit of alternate and/or throwback threads for the season.
