New Québec CanPL Team Brings a Familiar Name Into the 21st Century

The Canadian Premier League‘s newest franchise is bringing a familiar name to soccer fans in Québec into the 21st century.

The league announced on Wednesday, September 24, the addition of its ninth team, which will play at the Stade Boréale in Laval, Québec, starting in April 2026. Later that day came the unveiling of team’s name — FC Supra du Québec — and its logo during an event at the Complex Multi-Sports de Laval.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s derived from the Montréal Supra, a franchise in the Canadian Soccer League from 1988 to 1992. The new team’s logo — a half-red, half-blue diamond with a white S overtop — is a reimagining of the original Supra crest, including its red, white and blue colour scheme.

The S in the crest is meant to portray “movement and progress,” while the diamond shape represents the blocks of communities within Québec. “The red displays the club’s Canadian pride, while the blue is an ode to the team’s Francophone influence and the white to unity and a bright future ahead,” the league says on its website.

“We want to be known as the club from here, for here. The team’s name was a natural choice. We are honouring Quebec’s rich soccer tradition while building on community connections and elevating the game to the highest level.

“Our team branding is deeply rooted in the unique culture of Quebec soccer. We are proud to have world-class expertise within the team’s ownership group, including a designer who has developed brand identities for leading soccer clubs globally, and who helped create our own branding.”

The original Supra played five seasons in the Canadian Soccer League, with their best result being a loss in the league semifinals in 1992. Notable alumni include Mauro Biello, Alex Bunbury and Christian Gourcuff.

“Moving into Quebec represents more than adding a new CPL market; it’s a strategic cornerstone of our coast-to-coast vision for Canadian professional soccer. Establishing a CPL club in the Greater Montreal Area fills a competitive gap and showcases our homegrown talent nationally and internationally, while opening doors to one of the country’s most vibrant and influential business regions. Quebec’s strong economy and passionate sports community create unparalleled opportunities for investment, sponsorship, and media reach, strengthening our national footprint, uniting diverse audiences, and ensuring Canadian soccer is positioned to thrive well beyond 2026.”

Stade Boréale seats just under 5,600 spectators and is located in Laval, just north of Montréal and the third-largest city in the province. It was built specifically for Montréal Roses FC of the Northern Super League, and FC Supra du Québec has entered into a lease with Roses FC to become a tenant at the stadium.
