Oakland Roots SC of the USL Championship is bringing art to the pitch while also celebrating the waters of the San Francisco Bay with their 2025 third kit, made by CHARLY.
The kit was unveiled on Tuesday, September 30, and will be worn on the field for the first time on Tuesday, October 7, when Oakland Roots host Hartford Athletic at the Oakland Coliseum.
The new kit was designed in collaboration with internationally recognized, Oakland-based artist Muzae Sesay and launched in partnership with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). The colours and design of the kit are patterned after Sesay’s work, “The Sun Has Reached The Same Point As The Moon Above The Ocean.”
The jersey has “vibrant, undulating forms and deep rhythmic colors,” according to a press release. “The kit’s artwork evokes the mysterious pull of our Bay waters, a connection echoed in the inner collar phrase, ‘It’s in the water.’”

“This is a surreal project for me to be a part of. It’s my two biggest passions intersecting in a way I never expected. As a practicing studio artist who spent many amazing years working at SFMOMA as well as being a longtime football fan and kit collector, this collaboration is deeply personal to me. It’s a dream to have a painting based on my relationship to the Bay Area translated in this way — especially for it to be with a team like Oakland Roots, whom I’ve followed and supported since first reading about their inception in an article. My hope with this project is that it leads to greater interconnection between the art world and local sports, and also among all seemingly distant cultural communities — sustaining and nurturing the collaborative spirit of the Bay.”
— Muzae Sesay, artist
The Roots crest is rendered in black and gold on the left chest, while sponsor and manufacturer logos are also gold. Side panels are solid black, while the black sleeve cuffs have dark red trim on the left side and dark green trim on the right. The V-neck collar has black, dark red and dark green stripes, and a solid black panel runs across the back of the shoulders.

“It’s a dream to collaborate with SFMOMA and such an inspiring artist like Muzae. These one-of-a-kind kits will be stunning on the field as we represent the local area through art and fashion. Bay waters give much to us and never ask for anything back. There is a beauty in the water that connects The Bay, and it’s humbling to see this beautiful piece of art come together to tell that story.”

Oakland Roots, SFMOMA and Sesay collaborated earlier this year on a limited-edition collection of T-shirts, sweatshirts and tote bags that are available exclusively at SFMOMA and through the museum’s online shop.
The third kit will be available for purchase during a launch event at SFMOMA and at the Dimes Gallery in the Oakland Coliseum during the October 7 game. Kits bought at either of these events will come with a limited edition digital collectible of Sesay’s work that’s accessible via a QR code.
