AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners Go All In On Kachina For 10th Anniversary

The Arizona Coyotes may be no longer, but the Tucson Roadrunners are making sure their spirit lives on in the state with new uniforms.

As they head into their 10th anniversary season, the Roadrunners — former AHL affiliates of the Coyotes and current affiliates of the Utah Mammoth — have unveiled new primary uniforms that go all in on the Indigenous-inspired kachina style first popularized by their former parent club.

“This season marks an important milestone for our franchise, and we wanted to celebrate it in a way that reflects both our history and our future,” Roadrunners president Bob Hoffman said on the team’s website. “The Kachina look has always connected strongly with our fans across Arizona, and we’re excited to make it the centerpiece of our identity in this anniversary year.”

Both jerseys feature a kachina-style roadrunner with skates and a hockey stick on the front and multicoloured Southwestern-style striping on the sleeves and waist. The white jersey — which is designated as the away jersey in the Roadrunners’ online shop — has forest green shoulders with brick red outlines, a forest green collar with a brick red insert at the front, and forest green panels on the forearms and waist.

The dark home jersey, meanwhile, as a forest green base and brick red panels on the forearms and waist. The multicoloured striping on the sleeves and waist remains the same, as do the forest green shoulders and collar.

“Our new uniforms are bold and unmistakably Tucson,” added Rob Mattina, the Roadrunners’ vice president of marketing. “They pay tribute to the colors and traditions that make hockey in the desert unique, while giving our players and fans something fresh to rally around as we celebrate 10 years in Southern Arizona.”

The white jersey has brick red numbers with sand outlines. None of the photos available of the green jerseys showed what their numbers would look like.

The Roadrunners quietly made the kachina bird their primary logo over the summer. But their 10th anniversary logo — which sits on the left shoulder of both new jerseys while the Mammoth logo appears on the right — still prominently features their old cartoon roadrunner logo.

The Roadrunners first adopted a kachina roadrunner logo in 2019 for a black alternate jersey, which was popular enough for the team to add a white version with mostly purple accents in 2022.

The Roadrunners arrived in Tucson in 2016 when the Coyotes purchased their AHL affiliate at the time, the Springfield Falcons, and moved them to the desert. The team was part of the package when Alex Meruelo purchased the Coyotes in 2019. In 2024, when Meruelo sold the Coyotes to the NHL — who then sold it to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith while allowing Meruelo to keep the Coyotes’ name and logo along with an option to reactivate the team within five years if a new arena could be built — he retained ownership of the Roadrunners.

The Roadrunners open their 2025-26 AHL regular season with a pair of road games against the Ontario Reign on Friday, October 10, and Sunday, October 12. Their home opener is on Saturday, October 18, against the Calgary Wranglers.
