Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills To Wear 1960s Throwback Uniforms On Monday Night Football

The Atlanta Falcons and Buffalo Bills are both set to wear 1960s throwback uniforms during their Monday Night Football matchup (7:15 p.m. ET on ESPN), though this specific visual matchup never occurred as the teams didn’t meet until the 1973 season.

The Falcons, who are celebrating their 60th season this fall, only wore this design during the 1966 season, with red helmets that display their classic logo on the sides, black jerseys with block numbers and the same logo on the sleeves, white pants and striped socks.

The revived the look as a throwback option in 2009 until the NFL implemented its one-helmet rule in 2013, then blended eras by pairing their standard black lids and throwback decals with the 1966 jerseys, pants and socks from 2016-2021.

When the league relaxed its policy in 2022, the Falcons reintroduced the red shells, which feature a gray facemask and stripes down the center that borrows its colors from in-state schools Georgia and Georgia Tech. They are 6-2 in the uniforms since the red helmets returned.

That includes 3-0 last season, with victories over the New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants. They’re scheduled to wear them two more times this season, as well, including at the Buccaneers on Dec. 11 and against the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 29.

The game at Tampa Bay is especially notable, as it will mark the first time that Atlanta will wear the throwback uniforms on the road. They’ll also go head-to-head with the home version of the Buccaneers’ creamsicle throwback uniforms that evening.

The Bills, meanwhile, will counter the Falcons’ vintage look by wearing their all-white “Standing Buffalo” throwback uniforms, which feature a red bison silhouette on the helmets and traditional red and blue striping patterns on the sleeves, pants and blue socks.

Buffalo originally wore this design on the road from 1964-72, as well as a throwback option in 2009 and from 2012-21. They’ve been revived this season as the franchise celebrates its final season at Highmark Stadium and will be worn again on Nov. 16 against the Buccaneers.

It’s one of two throwback designs for the Bills this season, as they’ll also mark their final regular season game at Highmark Stadium by pairing their 1987-2001 red throwback helmets with their blue home jerseys and white pants against the New York Jets in Week 18.

The red helmet – which includes their “Charging Buffalo” logo on the sides, a white facemask and a blue, red and white striping pattern – was worn during the most successful era in franchise history, as Buffalo appeared in four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990-93.

That said, Monday night’s matchup between the Bills and Falcons will mark the second game this season where both teams are outfitted in a throwback uniform, joining the Buccaneers’ win over the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 5.

The Buccaneers wore the white road version of their creamsicle uniforms, while the Seahawks wore their 1990s-era design. It was nearly identical to their 1976 meeting, though Seattle did not have a royal blue facemask or the totem-style sleeve logos at that time.

Meanwhile, had the Bills and Falcons met in 1966, Monday night’s matchup would be a visual rematch. But by the time the two teams went head-to-head for the first time, Atlanta has already switched to red jerseys while Buffalo started wearing blue pants on the road.

In addition to the uniforms, the Falcons will also paint the turf at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a vintage design that prominently displays their 1966-2002 logo at midfield and diamonds in the end zones. They also used this design in last season’s win over the Buccaneers.
