The Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League are putting their own twist on their city’s hockey history with jerseys honouring a past local franchise.
The Sea Dogs are hosting “Flames Night” on Friday, November 21, when they host the Moncton Wildcats at TD Station. For the occasion, they’ll don sweaters in the style of the Saint John Flames, the American Hockey League team that called the city home from 1993 to 2003.
While the Sea Dogs gave fans a first look at the jerseys on their social media channels on Wednesday, November 19, none of the photos posted showed the entire jersey in one shot. But they did give enough details to piece together what they’ll look like.
The jerseys will emulate what the Flames wore in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with a black base, angled striping and a fire-breathing dragon on the front. However, the crest and striping are recoloured to match the Sea Dogs’ current blue, black and silver colour scheme.

The numbers are white with blue and silver outlines, and the collar is blue with silver trim. The Sea Dogs’ primary logo appears on at least one shoulder.

This isn’t the first time the Sea Dogs have paid homage to their predecessors. In 2012, they wore alternate jerseys featuring a crest depicting a harbour seal wrapping around the words “SAINT JOHN,” much like the dragon does in the Flames’ 1998-2003 logo.

The Saint John Flames were the AHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames for their entire time in New Brunswick. The NHL team then moved the franchise around several times before they eventually ended up sharing the Scotiabank Saddledome with their parent club:
- Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights (2005-2007)
- Quad City Flames (2007-2009)
- Abbotsford Heat (2009-2014)
- Adirondack Flames (2014-2015)
- Stockton Heat (2015-2022)
- Calgary Wranglers (2022-present)
