The NBA announced on Monday that Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James will wear a patch on his jersey for the remainder of the year that celebrates his record-setting 23rd season in the league.
The patch features James’ silhouette doing his signature chalk toss inside of a shield with four different color stripes representing his two stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers (navy blue and wine), Miami Heat (red) and Lakers (gold).
It will be removed from his jersey after every game, dated, authenticated and placed in a Topps trading card, similar to how rookies wore a “Debut Patch” in their first games and reigning award winners have a gold Logoman on their jerseys this season.
The patch made its on-court debut in the same city where James – the NBA’s all-time leading scorer – began his legendary career in 2003, as the Lakers fell to the Kings in Sacramento on Monday night.
James is the only player in league history to play 23 seasons and now trails Hall of Fame center Robert Parish, who spent 21 seasons in the NBA from 1976-97, by only 29 games for the most games played in league history (1,611).
