The Penn State Nittany Lions men’s hockey team will be those-who-shall-remain-nameless when they take on the Michigan State Spartans in an outdoor game this weekend.
Penn State unveiled their retro jerseys for the January 31 game at Beaver Stadium — usually occupied by the Nittany Lions’ football team — on their website and social media channels earlier this week. They channel the look of the school’s hockey teams from 1941 to 1947, the first era of varsity hockey at Penn State, while also paying homage to the gridiron squad by forgoing names on the backs of the jerseys like their football brethren do.
The navy blue jerseys have white shoulder yokes, and a wide white stripe flanked by two narrower stripes run around the sleeves. “PENN STATE” is written across the front of the jersey in the same font as the school’s name appears in the endzones at Beaver Stadium. All these elements mirror the jerseys worn by Penn State’s varsity hockey teams in the 1940s.

The jerseys also have white player numbers on the front, underneath the wordmark. On the back, the white numbers have been enlarged for better visibility in the football stadium, and a subtle Beaver Stadium blueprint pattern has been added. Lion’s head logos appear on the nape of the neck and on the insert at the front of the collar.

The pants and helmet that go with the jersey are white with a single navy blue stripe, mimicking the football team’s iconic helmets. The navy blue socks have the same striping pattern as the sleeves.
Game-worn jerseys will auctioned off after the game, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the State College Coyotes Sled Hockey program.
While this is the first time Beaver Stadium has been used for an outdoor hockey game, head coach Gus Gadowsky said in a story on Penn State’s website that it’s an idea that has been floating around for 15 years. Converting the football stadium to hockey has “required coordination across Penn State and the State College community.”
Penn State is currently ranked No. 5 in the country in men’s hockey, while Michigan State is ranked No. 2. Puck drop between the two teams is 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
