The organizers in St. Petersburg announced next year’s medals for the Winter Olympic Games. They will use a pathwork design, meant to recall the many regions of Russia, holding its first WInter Olympiad next February.
The designs cut into the medals, and engrave imagery onto them. Both the Olympic and Paraolympic medals were shown, as they will be the same.
The backs are cut away even more, both sides meant to show through to the obverse.
For any of foibles, the Olympics tend to get branding consistency exactly right. This patchwork design will be the common thread throughout the games’ visualizations.
Each medal will be 4 inches around, almost a half an inch thick, and will weight 16 ounces.
The only shame here is that the patchwork cutouts aren’t unique to each medal. Otherwise, this is an exceptional design.
What do you think? Would you wear one of these if you earned it? I’m pretty sure this question will garner a 100% response of yes.
