The Phoenix Coyotes today shared some of the changes which will accompany their plans to change their name to the Arizona Coyotes for next season.
According to a series of Tweets from Arizona Republic hockey reporter Sarah McLellan we have learned:
The new Arizona Coyotes name will become official during NHL Draft Weekend, which is June 27-28, we will also make the name change official in our SportsLogos.Net database during that weekend.
A throwback jersey game will be played, no specifics but it’d be a safe bet that they’ll be wearing their original Coyotes uniforms in the contest.
“Sounds like” the current third jerseys will be phased out, the black uniforms with a running coyote logo across the chest had been used since 2008-09.
As we’d heard before, the only changes to the uniform will be very minor, updating the shoulder patch to read “AZ” instead of “PHX”. We have previously reported on a potential series of leaked Arizona Coyotes logos, see that report here.
More drastic changes are possible for 2015-16 but the team “likes the logo”
The 2015-16 season will be the Coyotes’ 19th in Arizona since the franchise relocated from Winnipeg in 1996. They are changing their name from “Phoenix” to “Arizona” as part of a recent deal struck with the City of Glendale, AZ where the Coyotes play their home games.
