To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hockey Canada, the team will be wearing special uniforms during the upcoming 2014-2015 international competition season.
The uniforms are primarily based off the design worn by the Canadian side at the 1974 Summit Series, this fall being the 40th anniversary of the oft-forgotten sequel to the classic in 1972. Mostly because Canada, represented only by WHA players this time, got smoked, losing the series to the Soviets 4-1-3.
Like 1972 “CANADA” is across the front diagonally, some may call it “Rangers-style”. On the top left chest is the new Hockey Canada 100th anniversary logo while at the collar is the familiar primary “Stickman” logo Team Canada has been using since the mid 1990s. The placement of a team primary logo at the collar is a first for a hockey jersey.
This uniform replaces what Team Canada wore at the 2014 World Jr. and Non-Jr.(?) Championships earlier this year, *not* those unpopular Olympic uniforms — which are always unique to the Olympic games.
While the official release did not mention anything about this jersey being worn in game, a “History of Team Canada Jerseys” feature on the website noted that these will indeed be worn throughout the 2014-15 international schedule, which would presumably include the World Jr. Championships in December (hosted by Canada) and the World Championships in April.
Here’s how Hockey Canada described these new uniforms:
Hockey Canada’s 100th Anniversary jersey is an emblem of Canada’s passion for the game, rooted deep within our nation’s rich culture surrounding hockey. The 100th Anniversary of Hockey Canada is a unique moment in Canadian hockey history and provides Canadians with the opportunity to celebrate our past successes while also looking to the future.
The 100th Anniversary jersey is the perfect representation of the pride that Canadians feel when they look back and reflect on our country’s deep and rich history in hockey.
The Hockey Canada 100th Anniversary jersey features three elements that are uniquely Canadian, including the traditional Hockey Canada colours, the Hockey Canada stickman logo along with the 100th Anniversary logo, and the bold and iconic two stripes.
The 100th Anniversary logo design by Hockey Canada is unique to this jersey and the small Hockey Canada neckline logo is unique to the Canadian jersey as no other jersey of IIHF nations has a federation mark in this location.
The diagonal lettering of “Canada” on the jersey is unique retro look that has not been used by Canada for over 40 years.
The jersey is made from 73% recycled polyester as part of Nike’s commitment to produce performance apparel with a reduced environmental impact.
