You know, I’m honestly a little surprised that it took this long for something like this to happen to a Las Vegas-based team. With that being said, in this current era of wacky uniforms and gimmicks in college football where programs are going to new lengths to entice recruits to come to their school to play, this was the perfect time to strike. Via SB Nation’s college football section, the UNLV Rebels revealed their new field design, and it looks like something you’d see on a craps table in a casino.
Here’s a bit from SB Nation’s piece:
The design is based on the Neon Boneyard, a Las Vegas museum dedicated to vintage Vegas signage. The new end zones will include a nod to the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. Yardages will be placed over diamonds reminiscent of the Stardust Casino, with the 50-yard line highlighted by a starburst design from the “Welcome” sign.
This is all part of UNLV’s effort to get closer to the Las Vegas community and culture, which means that they’re embracing the casinos and the famous sign that welcomes visitors into town. I’ve gotta say, I’m a fan of it. It’s fun!
But, are you a fan of it? Or do you think that they should’ve stuck to the standard football field design?
