Tottenham Hotspur are set to sign kit deal with Nike

As of right now, there is only one English Premier League team who’s sponsored by Nike, and that’s Manchester City. That’s obviously a low number, especially when you consider that they regularly had at least three or four Premier League teams sporting the swoosh on their chest at times during the past decade or so.

That number may be going up to two in the future, as The Daily Mail is reporting that current EPL title contenders Tottenham Hotspur may be in line to sign a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike. Here are the details from The Daily Mail’s report:

Tottenham are understood to be deep in discussions for Nike to become their next kit suppliers in what would be at least a £30 million-a-year deal.
The current contract with American giants Under Armour, whose football expansion in the UK has not happened as quickly as expected, expires at the end of next season and Spurs will want a new mega shirt agreement in place for when they move into their new ground in 2018.

If Nike and Spurs do indeed agree on a kit supplier deal worth £30 million a year, then that would put them on par with their London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal when it comes to money from kit supplier deals, and would also put them near the top of the worldwide rankings. As far as aesthetics are concerned, unless Nike can come out of their recent slump when it comes to design (if you don’t think Nike’s in a slump, then please take a look at the rumored kits for US Soccer), this could actually be a downgrade. I’d say that Under Armour has done a pretty good job with their designs for Spurs over the years, so this would be a pretty tough act to follow for Nike should this deal go down.
