The Kansas City Royals would like you to remember they won the World Series recently.
Last year, as most recent defending World Champions do, the Royals wore a version of their standard uniform with gold trim for their opening series… it looked good. While every other team stopped right there to focus on the season ahead, the Royals decided to bring back the gold for every Friday home game throughout the remainder of the season. Kansas City failed to make the postseason in 2016, ending both their chance of repeating as World Champs but also their run of back-to-back American League titles.
Alas, it appears in 2017 a very close version of the “Hey, we’re the World Series champs!” combo will be back, now as an official team alternate uniform… which means it’ll probably be around for even more seasons after this one. This information based entirely off of a teaser video posted to their social media accounts which showed flashes of gold accents from the new uniform accompanied with text calling it their “new home alternate jersey and cap”.
As you can see from the screengrabs above, the cap is blue with the MLB logo in gold just as it was in 2016 (no idea if the front is the same, of course), while this shows the front of the jersey has gold numbers with blue trim – the jersey from 2016 had plain blue numbers while the “Royals” scripted wordmark was gold with blue.
So it won’t be exactly the same as what we saw this past season but certainly promises to be quite close.
There’s a reason the uniform was brought back after that first series, it was popular; the fans loved it, players too, it’s hard to deny it’s a sharp looking uniform, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that gold is a part of the official Royals colour scheme.
We’ll update with more details as they become available.
