When the WNBA’s San Antonio Stars announced that they were relocating to Las Vegas for the 2018 season, the speculation was that they would go by the name Vegas Stars. When the team changed direction and announced that they would be called the Las Vegas Aces instead, a certain Triple-A minor league baseball club to the north made it known that the state of Nevada might not be big enough for two Aces.

The Las Vegas Aces will take the court for the first time when the WNBA season debuts in May 2018. The Reno Aces, an Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate in the Pacific Coast League, have gone by the name since they moved to Nevada from Tucson before the 2009 season. Both teams are preceded by the now-defunct Alaska Aces of the ECHL, who debuted in 2003. The Alaska Aces were sold and relocated to Portland, Maine, after the 2016-17 season.
