With only 60 days to go until it’s opening ceremonies, scientists in the United Kingdom have created the world’s smallest Olympic rings.
According to The Daily Mail, it’s the smallest logo ever created – a single molecule 100,000 times thinner than a human hair, precision-crafted to resemble the five Olympic rings and was purposely ‘designed’ by the Royal Society of Chemistry and IBM – and is called Olympicene.
“When doodling in a planning meeting, it occurred to me that a molecular structure with three hexagonal rings above two others would make for an interesting synthetic challenge. I wondered: could someone actually make it, and produce an image of the actual molecule?” – Professor Graham Richards, of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
What would have been more interesting was if they created the actual 2012 London Olympics logo at such a small scale… has the name “Horribleolympicbrandingicene” been taken?
