With fall camp and the start of the season right around the corner, college football teams typically take part in photo shoots that assist with various promotions and player introduction videos throughout the year.
In some cases, these photo shoots give us our first look at uniforms changes programs might have. And that was exactly the case at Marshall, where the Thundering Herd have scrapped their old white uniform in favor of some new — but familiar — road threads.
The new white uniform certainly appears out of place next to Marshall’s Kelly green home and black alternate sets, but that’s because the Thundering Herd don’t have a lucrative deal with Nike in which products are provided for free. The university instead receives discounted apparel and equipment, so equipment manager Zac Littleton tries to get one new jersey each season.
The end result of a process that began back in February was a more traditional look on Nike’s newest template.
“It was like you go with a new look and style, but you are paying homage to the old uniform because it is similar to the older style we used to do,” Littleton told The Herald-Dispatch.
The simpler look should remind fans of when Randy Moss, Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich and helped elevate the program from from Division I-AA (now FCS) powerhouse to Mid-American Conference champions.
“I feel like that’s a throwback,” said linebacker Jaquan Yulee. “That’s a throwback to the old Marshall when they were winning everything – championships and all. That’s just a surprise and something we’ve got up our sleeves.”
The most notable difference when comparing the two looks is that the white jerseys no longer have a contrasting sleeve cap, which has been both green and black in recent years. The “Marshall” wordmark on the chest is also much larger than in years past.
The Thundering Herd also made a small change to their pants, removing the black stripe in favor of one solid look. They’ve also added the phrase “We are…I am” inside the collar.
Marshall, which finished last season at 9-4 overall (6-2 in Conference USA), opens the 2019 season against the Virginia Military Institute on Aug. 31. Kickoff at Joan C. Edward Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
We’ll likely get our first look at the new road uniforms the following weekend (Sept. 6) when the Thundering Herd travel to Boise State. That game will be broadcast live at 9 p.m. on ESPN 2.
