Though the Indoor Football League cancelled its 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic, teams are looking forward to resuming play next spring. That includes the Spokane Shock, who recently unveiled new uniforms sponsored by up-and-coming apparel manufacturer Phenom Elite.
“Phenom Elite is a perfect partner for us,” Shock owner Sam Adams said in a press release. “They’ve built a reputation around innovation, creativity and – most importantly – high quality, which perfectly fits our Spokane Shock tradition.”
Located in Spokane, Washington, the Shock are among the most notable franchises in indoor football, having won ArenaCups VII and X (2006 and 2009) and ArenaBowl XXIII (2010) before moving to the IFL in 2016. The team was renamed the Empire, though, because the AFL still owned the rights to the Shock nickname.
The Empire folded after two seasons, citing financial issues, but were resurrected this year by Adams, a former NFL defensive tackle who spent six seasons with the nearby Seattle Seahawks. He obtained the trademarks to the Shock nickname and the franchise rejoined the IFL.
“When I think of Spokane, I think of the Shock,” Adams said at the time. “The name is very important. This team has a rich history of being the Shock. It was unfortunate what happened with the Empire. I’m thankful for everyone who helped pave the way for us, and we felt that the Shock name was only thing we could pick for Spokane.”
The Shock were set to begin the 2020 season in late March, but the league postponed and eventually cancelled the season before their first scheduled game.
When Spokane finally returns to the field next spring, causal observers won’t notice much of a difference with the Shock’s look. The most notable change, though, is the switch from white numbers to blue numbers on the orange home jersey, white numbers to orange numbers on the blue alternate jersey and orange numbers to blue numbers on the white road jersey.
The uniforms feature a patterned version of Spokane’s secondary logo on the sleeve caps in a much more reserved manner than their previous Russell Athletic uniforms The corresponding pants have been cleaned up, as well, and no longer feature a wrap-around design on the waistline.
Spokane will wear one of three different helmets (orange, blue and white) that prominently display the aforementioned secondary logo on both sides. The glossy orange and white helmets have a traditional Braisher striping pattern, while the satin blue helmet has a tapered stripe that starts at the back bumper.
