Premier League mainstays Arsenal are hoping a triumph of the past will inspire their players today through their new away kit for 2021-22.
Made by adidas, the jersey is pale yellow without many bells or whistles. The collar, adidas logo, shoulder stripes and sponsor logo are dark blue, and the sleeve cuffs are dark blue with red trim. For the club crest, Arsenal have isolated the cannon from their usual crest and put that on the chest of the kit by itself in dark blue.
The cannon crest meant as a tribute to the Arsenal side of 1971, which won both the league championship and the FA Cup. This was the first time Arsenal had won the “double.” The club has used the standalone cannon in other applications over the years, but this is the first time it has appeared on a kit.
This is the first time since the 1990-91 season that a cannon has appeared on an Arsenal shirt outside of a shield.
The logo of Arsenal for Everyone is printed inside the collar “as a celebration of the diversity of the Arsenal family,” according to the club’s website.
The shorts and socks that go with the jersey are also yellow with dark blue and red accents.
The cannon crest also appears on Arsenal’s home goalkeeper kit for 2021-22, which is green with “a vibrant graphic print inspired by air in motion,” according to ArsenalDirect.com.
The yellow away kit will also be registered as an option for goalkeepers to wear during the 2021-22 season.
The jerseys were worn for the first time by the Arsenal women’s team on Sunday, May 16, when they played Crystal Palace in the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup. The men’s team also will wear them against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday, May 19.
