Four Premier League clubs released new away or third kits on Thursday, plus Venezia FC is returning to Serie A after 20 long years in a stylish home kit and Union Berlin is keeping things simple. Let’s take a closer look at these recent kit unveilings …
CHELSEA – Away
The little bit of yellow on Chelsea’s home kits for 2021-22 gets cranked all the way up for their away kits, made by Nike. The bright yellow (or “Opti Yellow,” as Nike calls it) base is accented all over by narrow black horizontal pinstripes. The sleeve cuffs are solid black, while the crew neck collar is mostly black except for a yellow insert at the front. The Nike logo, club crest and sponsor logo are all rendered in monochromatic black.
MANCHESTER CITY- Away
Manchester City’s away kit for 2021-22, made by Puma, looks simple but is deceptively complex. The shirt is predominantly white, with teal (“Ocean Depths”) accents on the sleeve cuffs and shoulders. The Puma logos, sponsor logos and club crest all fade from pink to purple to teal. The sponsor logo also has a water droplet effect, meant to raise awareness of a new football and safe water program launched in Manchester, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Mumbai by Cityzens Giving, the club’s charitable arm. The logo of Cityzens Giving is printed inside the collar.
WEST HAM UNITED – Third
Premier League side West Ham United have combined a little bit of their traditional claret-and-blue colour scheme with navy blue for their 2021-22 third kit, made by Umbro. The shirt is predominantly navy, with a heather effect woven in. Claret and light blue stripes are found on each sleeve cuff and on the front of the crew neck collar. The club crest and Umbro logo are rendered in light blue, while the sponsor logos are white.
WATFORD – Away
After eschewing red on their 2021-22 home kits, Premier League returnees Watford are all in on the colour for their away kits, made by Kelme. The front and back of the shirt features a tonal swirl pattern on the red base, while the raglan sleeves are solid red. Black side panels run about halfway down each side of the shirt and cut off at an angle, with red and yellow stripes near the cutoff. The V-neck collar is black with yellow trim. A graphic of a hornet appears on the back collar.
VENEZIA – Home
Back in Italy’s Serie A for the first time in 20 years, Venezia FC are marking the occasion in style with new home kits manufactured by Kappa. The shirt is predominantly black, with a faux Venetian wall texture all over. While the club’s traditional accent colours of green and orange can be found on the collar and sleeve cuffs, most of the accents are gold. This includes a “VENEZIA” wordmark across the chest in place of a shirt sponsor — something the club has done since at least 2016-17, when they played in Serie C. The gold stars arranged in a V below the wordmark are inspired by the Basilica di San Marco in Venice.
UNION BERLIN – Home
German Bundesliga side Union Berlin is keeping things simple and clean with their home kits for 2021-22. The kits are predominantly red, with embossed vertical pinstripes. The sleeve cuffs are white, while the crew neck collar is white with red trim. The adidas logo, adidas shoulder stripes and sponsor logo are all white. Like the away kit, the letters “UNVEU” are printed on the back collar, which stand for “Und niemals vergessen — Eisern Union” (“And never forget — Iron Union”).
