Seattle Kraken Reveal 2021-22 Inaugural Season Patch

With just three weeks before their first-ever pre-season game (yeah, that came up on us quickly), the NHL’s expansion Seattle Kraken have revealed the inaugural season logo they’ll be wearing on their jerseys.

The patch shows a navy blue shield with a depiction of Puget Sound at the bottom, Washington’s Mount Rainier can be seen rising up in the distance behind the waves in the middle-range shade of blue used by the team. The Kraken’s primary logo is placed on the water with INAUGURAL SEASON 2021-22 above in navy blue.

Seattle will wear this logo as a patch on the upper right corner of their home blue and road white uniforms throughout the 2021-22 season as we’ve seen via the club’s official promotional images for team merchandise:

Wearing an inaugural season patch wasn’t the norm in the NHL up until the 1999-2000 season when the Atlanta Thrashers added a commemorative logo to the front of their jersey. Prior to this, inaugural season logos did exist though they were reserved for merchandise and other promotional material. Since the Thrashers did so in 1999, each and every NHL team to play an inaugural season (either due to expansion or relocation) has worn a patch marking the ocassion.

Here’s a look back at some of the other inaugural season logos used by NHL clubs over the past 30 years, as mentioned in the above paragraph, anything pre-Thrashers were not worn on the ice.

The Seattle Kraken, the 32nd NHL team, will make their on-ice debut on September 26th for a pre-season tilt against the Vancouver Canucks at the Spokane Arena. They’ll play their first-ever regular season game two weeks later on October 12th when they visit the Vegas Golden Knights. Following five on the road, the Kraken will finally make their regular season home debut at the renovated KeyArena (now known as Climate Pledge Arena) on October 23rd against Vancouver.
