Whether they stay up in the Premier League or not, Brentford FC will sport a familiar look at home during the 2022-23 season.
The club — currently in 12th place in their first-ever Premier League season — announced last week that they would carry over their red-and-white-striped 2021-22 home kit, manufactured by Umbro, into the 2022-23 season.
“Respectful, Progressive and Togetherness are our three core values at Brentford FC, as many of our fans know. We also believe in football being affordable for our fans and are aware of the need for the game to become more focused on sustainability. As such, when we discussed the idea, everyone at the Club was fully behind it,” Brentford chief executive Jon Varney said on the club’s website.
“Whilst it is not normal practice for Premier League clubs to roll a kit over for two seasons, fans have told us that they would be in favour of the savings that a two-season shirt would provide. This season, our membership of the Premier League means that the income we receive from broadcast and commercial partnerships far outweighs the income we can generate from retail, therefore now is the perfect time for us to try something different without it having a material impact on our revenue.”
The current practice for the vast majority of top-flight European soccer clubs is to release a full set of new kits each year: home, away, third, and sometimes even a fourth kit. This began in roughly the mid-2010s. For example, if you look at Arsenal FC’s kit history, most of their home kits prior to 2013-14 were worn for two seasons, unless they marked a special occasion such as their last season at Highbury (2005-06) or the club’s 125th anniversary (2011-12). Away and third kits changed more frequently; sometimes, away kits were re-designated as third kits in their second year.
Heading into 2021-22, Brentford had already carried forward their third kit from 2020-21 for their first Premier League season. That kit is predominantly white, with a claret crew neck collar trimmed with white. The sleeve cuffs feature claret, salmon and blue stripes.
Varney did confirm in the announcement that Brentford will have new away and third kits for 2022-23.
“For those fans keen to purchase a new shirt each season, we can confirm we will have a new away and a new third kit for the 2022-23 season,” he said. “We hope the new away shirt design will excite our fans who remember the ’80s and early ’90s, whilst the new third shirt is designed very much for the future!”
