The Ottawa Senators have added a patch to the upper right corner of the front of their jerseys in memory of team owner Eugene Melnyk who died March 28, 2022, at the age of 62.
The patch shows Melnyk’s initials “EM” on a circular patch, the colours of this patch are inverted depending on the home black jersey (white patch/black EM) or road white set (black patch/white EM).
Melnyk purchased the Ottawa Senators during the summer of 2003 when the club was facing bankruptcy, ensuring the team would remain in the Canadian capital. He was heavily involved in the re-development of the Senators logo and uniform, eventually settling on a refresh of the club’s original look when they rebranded in 2020.

Ottawa first honoured Melnyk by wearing a simple decal on the back of their helmets when they faced Nashville the day after his death. They switched to using the jersey patch for their next game, a road tilt at Detroit, on April 1.
