Just days after releasing its new visual identity, the XFL is facing a potential lawsuit from Togethxr, a media and commerce company owned by Olympic gold medalists Sue Bird, Alex Morgan, Chloe Kim and Simone Manuel that believes the league’s new mark is too similar to its own.
“To often the work and creativity of women is overlooked an undervalued,” the company, which is aimed at celebrating young millenial and Gen Z female athletes, said in a post on Twitter. “Diversity and equality are the norm around here. We’re thrilled to see the XFL embrace inclusivity, but this rebrand ain’t it. We’ve issued a legal notice and will continue to protect the important work we’re doing.”
Both logos feature an “X” that is split down the middle, while Togethxr’s being half white and half transparent and the XFL’s is completely filled in. The post also points out how the league’s press release used similar language to what the company had previously shared on social media.
Togethxr’s co-founders – as well as Bird’s fiancée, Olympic soccer star Megan Rapinoe – called out the XFL for violating their intellectual property rights on social media. The league and its ownership group, which includes actor and former WWE superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has not publicly responded to the claims, however.
