The Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs have long been associated with one pork product—their suite of logos includes a strip of bacon—but they added another this week. The team will play a game as the Lehigh Valley Scrapple, paying homage to a regional delicacy that can best be described as a mashup of all the pork scraps that are left over after the rest of the pig has been used for other products. (Don’t get me wrong—as a native of the region, I can attest that it’s delicious.)
The IronPigs play in Allentown, Pennsylvania, just over 60 miles from Philadelphia, the epicenter of scrapple’s regional reach. The first known scrapple recipes date back to German colonists in the region from the 1600s and 1700s.
The brand features an anthropomorphized congealed loaf of scrapple wielding a fork and a fierce expression set against a backdrop that can only be described as “Jersey diner yellow.” Lehigh Valley is the second team to honor the fried meat stuff as an alternate brand, following in the footsteps of the Delmarva Shorebirds, whose scrapple-based logo debuted in 2018.
The IronPigs will wear the brand during their August 12 game against the Charlotte Knights.
