Liverpool’s ‘Dizzying’ Away Kit Highlights Recent European Club Football Unveilings for 2022-23

Inspired by their home city’s “pioneering role” in the British dance music scene in the 1990s, Premier League side Liverpool FC have unveiled a “dizzying” new away kit for the 2022-23 season.

Liverpool officially unveiled the kit prior to wearing it in a preseason friendly against Manchester United in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday, July 12. It uses Nike’s new Vaporknit template, with a white base. A swirling multicolour graphic covers the front and sleeves, with another, similarly shaped swirling black graphic underneath. The sleeve cuffs are solid black, as are triangular inserts at the hem, the sponsor logos and the club crest.

The back of the kit is solid white for the legibility of names and numbers. There is a black insert on the back collar, onto which the Eternal Flames and the number “97” are printed as a tribute to the victims of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

INTER MILAN – Home

After moving to a snakeskin look in 2021-22, Italian Serie A side Inter Milan have gone back to tradition for their 2022-23 home kit, made by Nike. The classic black and blue stripes have returned, this time “inspired by the design of the ’60s.” The stripes over the shoulders more or less follow the contours of Nike’s Vaporknit template, and the template’s knit pattern appears all over the shirt. The sleeve cuffs are black with blue trim.

Inside the collar is a logo with the name of their home city, Milano, and “1908” denoting the year the club was founded. Above the Nike logo on the chest is the coccarda, celebrating Inter’s Coppa Italia win in 2021-22. This is Inter’s first kit with the logo of new main sponsor Digitalbits, an open-source blockchain company that also sponsors Serie A rivals AS Roma.

OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS – Away

French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais is highlighting “the bond uniting the club to its fans” with its 2022-23 away kit, made by Adidas. The shirt is predominantly red, with a blue smoke pattern covering the front and sleeves. The V-neck collar is solid red, while the Adidas shoulder stripes are white.

VALENCIA CF – Away

After unveiling a rather reserved retro home kit last week, Spanish La Liga side Valencia CF have loosened the reins with their 2022-23 away kit, made by Puma. The shirt is predominantly black, but has a large tonal pattern applied to the front that is based on a special logo created to commemorate their home stadium’s 100th anniversary (left below). The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are orange with black stripes running through them. The club crest appears in a one-colour orange application.

CRYSTAL PALACE – Home

Premier League side Crystal Palace look to make a mark in their new home kits for 2022-23, made by Macron. The shirt starts with a blue base and adds vertical marker stroke stripes in light blue and red. The collar and sleeve cuffs are white, with thin red and blue stripes. The marker stroke stripes mirror the stripes found on Crystal Palace’s away kits, unveiled in late June.

REAL VALLADOLID – Away

Spanish La Liga side Real Valladolid is embracing its dark side with its 2022-23 away kit, made by Adidas. The front of the shirt features purple panels that fade from darker to lighter, along with an iridescent club crest on the left chest. Black panels on the shoulders frame the gold Adidas stripes. The sleeves are solid purple, and there is a gold panel under each arm. The purple V-neck collar is trimmed in gold.

EINTRACHT FRANKFURT – Away

German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt are mixing it up with their 2022-23 away kit, made by Nike. The shirt has a black base, and the front features a triangular op art pattern in dark grey. The club crest, Nike logo and sponsor logo appear on the chest in white.

MONTPELLIER HSC – Home

French Ligue 1 side Montpellier HSC are putting a modern twist on their usual blue-and-orange home look for 2022-23. Their new kits, made by Nike, feature orange hoops made up of diagonal lines on a blue base. The orange lines fade in and out as they move across the shirt. It’s a pattern also seen on Sporting CP’s third kit this year, though in different colours. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are blue.

AC AJACCIO – Home, Away and Third

AC Ajaccio, based on the island of Corsica, are returning to Ligue 1 for the first time since 2013-14 in kits made by Adidas. The home kit features red and white vertical stripes on the front, along with white sleeves, red Adidas shoulder stripes and a red V-neck collar. The away kit is light blue with a heather pattern all over, mimicking the sea that surrounds the island. The third kit is black, with a tonal geometric pattern on the front and gold Adidas shoulder stripes.

The photos released with the kit announcement didn’t feature a main front-of-shirt sponsor, but it’s possible AC Ajaccio could add a sponsor before the Ligue 1 season begins.

AC MONZA – Home and Away

As they celebrate their 110th anniversary this year, AC Monza will take to the pitch in Italy’s Serie A for the first time in 2022-23 wearing kits made by Lotto. The home kit (right below) is almost entirely red, save for a vertical white stripe running down the left side of the jersey, underneath the club crest, and a white insert at the front of the collar. The away kit (left below) is the inverse — all white except for a red stripe and collar insert. The logo of main sponsor Motorola appears to be navy blue on the white away kit.

UC SAMPDORIA – Home, Away and Third

If it ain’t broke, UC Sampdoria won’t fix it. The Serie A side are continuing their home kit (second from right below) tradition in 2022-23: a predominantly blue kit with white, red and black stripes across the middle, plus a shield with a St. George’s cross inside. The striping moves to the crew neck collar, sleeve cuffs and side inserts on the white away kit (far right below), while the shield remains.

The third kit (far left below) is amber with a black collar and sleeve cuffs. The stripes from the home kit appear bordered in black, and the St. George’s shield remains in its usual place. The retro crest on the left chest features a black shield and is reminiscent of the crest Sampdoria used in the 1960s.

Sampdoria also released a goalkeeper kit (second from left above) with the other kits. It is solid turquoise with a crew neck collar and side panels that contain a geometric pattern and repeating Macron logos.

FEYENOORD ROTTERDAM – Third

Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord Rotterdam look to stand out in their new third kit for 2022-23, made by Adidas. The jersey features neon pink accents on a black base. Those accents include the V-neck collar, the Adidas shoulder stripes, and panels under the arms. The sponsor logos on the chest are also bright pink, and the club crest appears in black and pink.
