Manchester United Returns to White Away Kit for 2022-23 — Plus Other Recent Unveilings from Around Europe

Premier League powerhouses Manchester United are returning to a white away kit for the 2022-23 season.

The kit was unveiled on Saturday, July 16, during a stop in Melbourne on the club’s preseason tour of Australia. The city’s Federation Square was transformed into a replica of the changing room at United’s home ground back in England, Old Trafford.

The kit is predominantly white with a “helix spiral design” woven into the fabric; “the fluid lines represent elements of the 1990s,” the club says on its website. White and red parallelograms are woven into the black V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs.

The two outside Adidas shoulder stripes are red, while the inside one is black. The club crest appears on a black pentagonal shield.

“We approached this kit that the club will wear in opponent’s stadiums around the world with a fresh perspective, aiming to capture an indisputable sense of collective conviction and common purpose,” said Inigo Turner, design director at Adidas. “Wherever the club goes, we wanted it to carry its philosophy of youth, courage, and success, proudly woven into the fabric of the kit for players and fans alike to wear together.”

This is the first time since 2016-17 that Manchester United have worn a white away kit.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION – Away

Nike is putting the “bright” in “Brighton and Hove Albion” with the Premier League club’s away kits for 2022-23. The jersey is fluorescent orange, with a black crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs. The front of the shirt a pattern of diagonal lines that becomes lighter as the lines get narrower moving from left to right. The Nike and sponsor logos are solid black, while the club crest in rendered in black and white.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST – Away

Nottingham Forest are making a bold statement with their Macron away kits for 2022-23, their first season back in the Premier League since 1998-99. The yellow away kit features the same pattern on the sleeves and side panels as the 2022-23 home kit, but this time it stands out more in blue than in tone-on-tone red on the home kit. The pattern is inspired by the ironworks on the Trent Bridge, which supporters cross to reach their home stadium, the City Ground. The yellow and blue colour scheme also draws from Forest’s away kit in 1978, in which they won the League Cup over Liverpool in a replay.

ELCHE CF – Away and Third

Spanish La Liga side Elche CF are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, which means a special gold crest on both their Nike away and third kits for 2022-23. The away kit is predominantly black, with a tonal pattern of rectangles of varying widths on the raglan sleeves. The Nike and sponsor logos appear in white.

Meanwhile, the third kit is predominantly black, with the same pattern on the sleeves as the away kit, but in grey. The Nike and sponsor logos also appear in grey.

CA OSASUNA – Home, Away and Third

Fellow La Liga side CA Osasuna are going a little off-kilter with their Adidas kits for 2022-23. The home kit is mainly dark red, with the right raglan sleeve in navy blue. The V-neck collar and underarm panels are also navy blue, while the Adidas shoulder stripes and trim around the collar are white.

The away kit, meanwhile, is mainly black, with red shoulder panels that house the black Adidas shoulder stripes. The V-neck collar is black with red trim.

The third kit brings back the different-coloured sleeve from the home kit, this time a mint green right sleeve while the rest of the kit is white. A light grey monogram appears on the lower right corner of the front of the shirt. The V-neck collar and underarm panels are also mint green, while the Adidas shoulder stripes and collar trim are black.

SCHALKE 04 – Away

Bundesliga side Schalke 04 is joining forces with another German side, 1. FC Nürnberg, to celebrate their friendship through their 2022-23 away kits, both made by Adidas. The clubs will wear similar away kit designs, predominantly white with accents in their respective club colours. While Nürnberg will wear burgundy trim in the 2.Bundesliga this year, Schalke’s kit features a royal blue crew neck collar, Adidas shoulder stripes and broad triangular inserts over the shoulders.

TSG 1899 HOFFENHEIM – Third

While Bundesliga side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim threw it back to the 1990s for their 2022-23 away kit, made by Joma, they’re opting for “a futuristic look” for their third jersey. The kit is solid black, including the collar and sleeve cuffs, with the sponsor logo, manufacturer logo and club crest rendered in ice blue. “TSG stand for innovation and future-oriented action, which is reflected in the clear, futuristic design of our third kit,” the club says on its website.

FC LORIENT – Third

French Ligue 1 side FC Lorient takes inspiration from its natural surroundings for its 2022-23 third kit, made by Umbro. The shirt is predominantly off-white with a pattern of grey, black and orange flecks, representing the sand of the beaches around the city of Lorient. The Breton phrase “Etre an douar hag ar mor” (“Between the earth and the sea”) is printed on the back collar. The crew neck collar has orange and grey stripes running through it, while the sleeve cuffs are solid black.

MONTPELLIER HSC – Third

Fellow Ligue 1 side Montpellier HSC debuted their 2022-23 third kit, made by Nike, in a preseason friendly against La Liga side RCD Espanyol on Saturday. The kit features a light grey body and black sleeves. The club crest is rendered in black and white, and sponsor logos are solid black.

PSV EINDHOVEN – Third

Dutch Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven are back in blue with their third kit for 2022-23, made by Puma. The solid blue kit features a button-up collar with red and white striping, and harkens back to PSV sides that wore blue during some of their most famous victories in the 1980s and 2010s. The blue colour is also inspired by a blue flag that plays a prominent part in the club song and, in the past, was raised in the stadium before PSV home matches.
