On the heels of releasing their 2022-23 away kits on Thursday, Italian Serie A giants Juventus have teamed up with a Mexico-based fashion designer to remix the jersey for a limited edition collection.
Design house Liberal Youth Ministry has taken the new Juventus jersey and put its own spin on it, resulting in a unique capsule collection. It includes several distressed jerseys with LYM’s signature brightly colored prints underneath. It also includes hoodies with distressed jerseys overtop, allowing the hoodie print to show through.
“Liberal Youth Ministry and soccer converge in an energy that is difficult to describe: you have to live, sweat and feel it in every cell of your body. For me, a spirit that lights up and transforms is primitive youth.”
— Antonio Zaragoza, founder and designer, Liberal Youth Ministry
According to the press release announcing the collaboration, for Antonio, “a ripped shirt is the symbol of post-futuristic archeology that he calls primitive because it captures the essence of young people – their fire, their wilderness and free spirit – and how it speaks to us about a future in which we return to the essence of our roots: a sacred but modern spirituality.”
“This collaboration is a resignification,” the release goes on to say: “a dialogue between the iconic of the present and the past and the disruptiveness of the future that always emerges from destruction, like a fire that burns and transforms.”
LYM was established in 2016. Its pieces have been worn by some of the biggest names in music, including Justin Bieber and Kanye West.
The collection is being released in conjuction with Juventus’s preseason tour of the United States. They play Liga MX side CD Guadalajara tonight (Friday) at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and will play FC Barcelona on Tuesday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The tour wraps up with a match on Saturday, July 30, against Real Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
The capsule collection jerseys will be available for sale starting on Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m. Pacific time at Dover Street Market Los Angeles, Dover Street Market New York, and the DSMNY e-shop.
This isn’t the first time Juventus has collaborated with an artist. Back in April, the club unveiled a fourth kit for the 2021-22 season that was designed in collaboration with Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra. The colours and shapes used in the jersey mirror those used in a mural Kobra painted at the Juventus Academy in São Paulo, Brazil.
