Trio of Premier League Teams Highlight Recent 2022-23 Kit Unveilings from Around Europe

As the start of the 2022-23 European domestic football season inches closer and closer, clubs are still releasing new kits at a breakneck pace. Over the past few days, we’ve seen several new kits from across the continent, highlighted by three new launches from clubs in England’s Premier League.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION – Home

Brighton & Hove Albion was — by our count, anyway — the second-to-last Premier League team to release their home kit for 2022-23, and they’re hoping it was worth the wait. The kits, made by Nike, put a new twist on Brighton’s usual blue and white vertical stripes, making them much broader and adding a narrow yellow stripe down the middle of the blue stripes. The shoulder panels and sleeves are solid blue, while the crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are yellow.

As well, in their online shop, Brighton is listing their away kit from 2021-22 as their third kit for 2022-23. It is mint green and based on Nike’s Strike II template.

ASTON VILLA – Away

Aston Villa debuted their 2022-23 away kit, made by Castore, in a preseason friendly against fellow Premier League side Manchester United on Saturday in Perth, Australia. The kit is predominantly light blue, with narrow vertical stripes embossed on the front and back. Claret piping appears on the V-neck collar, sleeve cuffs and shoulders. Sponsor logos and the club crest are also claret, along with a lion rampant on the back collar.

BRENTFORD FC – Away

While Premier League side Brentford FC announced last December they would carry their home kits from 2021-22 forward into the 2022-23 season, they have released a new away kit, made by Umbro. Reminiscent of the club’s away kits from the 1980s and 1990s, it is light blue with a heather effect across the front and back. The sleeves and standup collar are solid light blue, while the sleeve cuffs and sponsor logos are navy blue. It features a retro castle crest that the club used between 1975 and 1993 (inset below). The bee from the club’s current crest appears on the back collar.

This kit is listed as the “22/24 Second Shirt” in the club’s online shop, which seems to indicate it will be used for two seasons as well.

UD ALMERÍA – Home

After finishing first in Spain’s Segunda División last season, UD Almería are back in La Liga for the first time since 2014-15. To mark the occasion, they are reaching back into their history for their home kits, made by Castore. The kits feature red and white vertical stripes, with the red ones slightly wider than the white ones, and narrow red and white stripes in between. The back of the jersey is solid red. The sleeves are red, with white trim at the cuffs, and the crew neck collar is solid red.

1. FC KÖLN – Third

The new third kit for German Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln, made by Hummel, “combines the emotional side of the club with the Danish outfitters’ urban design,” according to the club’s website. The shirt is predominantly blue, with tonal lightning bolts across the front. The raglan sleeves and crew neck collar match the darker blue shade of the bolts. There is white piping on the collar, sleeve cuffs and hem. Sponsor and Hummel logos appear in white, and the 1. FC Köln crest is in full colour on the left chest.

MAINZ 05 – Third

German Bundesliga side Mainz 05 pays tribute to its home city with its third kit for 2022-23, made by Kappa. Like their home and away kits, Mainz’s third kit features the club’s signature geometric pattern writ large tonally over the front of the blue shirt. But another tonal pattern depicts outlines of all the districts of the city of Mainz. The club’s crest appears in full colour on the left chest, while the crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are trimmed in white. The Mainz coat of arms appears on the back collar.

STADE DE REIMS – Away

The 2022-23 away kit for French Ligue 1 side Stade de Reims, made by Umbro, pays tribute to one of the club’s most famous victories. In 1953, Stade de Reims won the Latin Cup, a tournament featuring the champions of Spain, Italy, France and Portugal. To mark that win, the new white away kit features gold shoulder panels with a pattern of white outlines of the Latin Cup trophy (see detail below). A silhouette of the trophy is also printed inside the collar along with the date of the final (June 7, 1953). The shoulder panels are bordered in black, and the gold collar has a black stripe through the center. Sponsor logos and the club crest are black.

RANGERS FC – Away

Perennial Scottish Premiership contenders Rangers FC have rounded out their set of kits for 2022-23 with the unveiling of their away kit, made by Castore. It features a retro-inspired diagonal split on the front, with the top right half white and the bottom left half red. The club’s RFC monogram and sponsor logos appear in blue. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are white, with blue and red trim.

SPORTING CP – Third

Portuguese Premeira Liga powerhouses Sporting CP have “checked” another kit off their list for 2022-23. Their third kit, made by Nike, is white with a tonal checkerboard pattern all over the front and sleeves. There is a solid white panel on the back for names and numbers, and the V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are also solid white. Green stripes run down the sides of the shirt. Sponsor logos and the club crest appear in one-colour green applications.
