Adidas will no longer be the National Hockey League’s exclusive outfitter of on-ice jerseys as of 2024, according to a report from ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski.
The report states that Adidas, not the league, decided not to renew the agreement, which began with the start of the 2017-18 season. Not only did Adidas physically produce the uniforms players were wearing, but they were often also the ones designing them and the logos.
The NHL had partnered with Reebok for over a decade before switching to Adidas in 2017. Many Reebok staff shifted to Adidas then, meaning this is the end of nearly 20 years of Reebok/Adidas uniforms and designs.
Will Nike try for the big four sweep? We’ll find out. Wysh’s report states that the league has made other manufacturers aware that rights are available beginning with the 2024-25 season.
Adidas kicked off their partnership with the NHL via a swanky party in Las Vegas back in June 2017, comedian Russell Peters moderated, I enjoyed a few complimentary beverages, and the inaugural home uniforms for the expansion Vegas Golden Knights were unveiled (with white gloves!)
During their time with the NHL, the team at Adidas worked on the World Cup of Hockey in 2016, the entire identities of both the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken, as well as the whole Reverse Retro series back in 2020-21 (and again coming up in 2022-23).
UPDATE (July 28/22): The league and Adidas have confirmed this report courtesy of a joint statement:
The NHL and Adidas confirm that the NHL-Adidas partnership will not continue following the expiration of the current agreement after the 2023-24 NHL season. The NHL and Adidas look forward to continuing to work closely together over the next 2 years and to a smooth transition to the new authentic NHL uniform supplier, which will be announced by the NHL at the appropriate time.
