The Welsh national football team will be looking to light up its opponents at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar in new home and away kits by Adidas.
The kits were unveiled on Saturday, Sept. 3. The home kit is predominantly red, with a pattern of tonal diagonal lines across the front and sleeves. “The red home shirt takes inspiration from the Dragon with its fire-breathing design that embodies the spirit and history of our proud nation,” reads the Welsh FA’s website.
The back of the kit is solid red, including the side panels. The Adidas shoulder stripes are white. Thin green and white stripes adorn the crew neck collar. Green stripes run down the sides of the shirt and across the back hem.
Wales’ away kit is mostly white, with red Adidas shoulder stripes. The side panels and V-neck collar contain a pattern of red and green diamonds “that nods to Cymru kits of the past.” The side and hem stripes are green.
Both the home and away kits have a badge on the back collar containing a daffodil and the motto “Gorau Chwarae Cyd Chwarae” (“Best Play is Team Play”).
Wales will play in Group B in Qatar, along with the United States, Iran and England. Their first match is against the U.S. on Monday, Nov. 21, at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.
SCOTLAND – Home and Away
“Scottish heritage is at the heart” of Scotland’s new Adidas home and away kits, according to the Scottish FA’s website. The home kit takes the country’s traditional navy blue base and adds purple Adidas shoulder stripes and white trim around the collar. The sleeve cuffs feature a tartan pattern.
The side panels are white, while the side and hem stripes are purple. On the back collar of the home kit is a thistle graphic, a nod to Scotland’s national flower.
The away kit also features tartan, this time woven into the white base fabric. The shoulder stripes are again purple, as is some piping around the navy blue sleeve cuffs. The crew neck collar, side panels and side and hem stripes are also navy blue.
The Scottish FA also noted that the women’s national team would wear the new home kit, but would continue to wear the country’s 2020 away kit until a new custom women’s away kit is released in early 2023.
NORTHERN IRELAND – Home and Away
Northern Ireland launched both of its new Adidas kits on Thursday, Aug. 1. The home kit features quarters in different shades of green “to resemble the country’s iconic landscape.” It also features a white collar with a green button-up placket. The Adidas shoulder stripes, side stripes and side panels are all white.
Meanwhile, the away kit is predominantly yellow, with navy blue and red trim. According to the Irish FA, the design “pays tribute to two of the historic towering icons of the Belfast skyline – the Harland and Wolff gantry cranes Samson and Goliath.”
The front of the kit features embossed pinstripes, along with the Adidas logo and the national team crest centered on the chest in monochromatic navy blue. The shoulder stripes, side panels and side and hem stripes are all navy blue as well. The collar and sleeve cuffs are navy blue with red piping.
CZECHIA – Home
After their new away kit was one of 13 launched by Puma last Monday, Czechia also came out with a new home kit last week. According to the national team’s Twitter account, it is “a reference to our big successes in 1934, 1976 and 1996. As Czechoslovakia, the nation placed second at the 1934 World Cup and won the 1976 European championship; as the Czech Republic, they placed second at Euro 1996.
The kit is mostly red, with a white collar that tapers off onto the chest. Blue and white stripes adorn the sleeve cuffs. The national team crest sits in the center of the chest, with a Puma logo on the right chest.
CHILE – Away
The Chilean national team is back with a new away kit, made by Adidas, to compliment the home kit they unveiled a few weeks ago. It is predominantly white, with a faint grey pattern on the front and sleeves. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are royal blue with red trim. The shoulder stripes and side panels are royal blue, with the side and hem stripes are red.
According to a press release quoted by football shirt blog Todo Sobre Camisetas, “the white base represents the snow of the Andes mountain range, this time adding a gray graphic that reflects an artistic representation of the star power of the Chilean flag.”
ALGERIA – Home and Away
The Algerian national team is honoring heroes from the past with its new home and away kits, made by Adidas. According to football shirt blog Footy Headlines, The diagonal lines forming vertical stripes down the left side of the front of the shirt harken back to kits the Algerian team wore in the 1982 World Cup.
The home kits are predominantly white, with green zigzags forming the stripes on the left side. The sides of the collar are green, leading into the green Adidas shoulder stripes. The collar also has white trim around the edge. The sleeve cuffs are green with gold piping, while the side panels and side and back hem stripes are also green. The gold Adidas logo and the national team crest sit in the center of the chest.
The away kit pretty much just swaps green and white. The gold trim remains on the sleeve cuffs, but the Adidas logo on the chest switches to white.
