The BYU football program announced on Monday morning it will wear hand-painted helmets with the Wasatch Mountains on one side and a portrait of a cougar on the other for Saturday’s game against Arkansas (3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN).
The helmet is primarily royal blue with two white stripes down the center and features a white facemask for the first time since the early 1980s, when a select few players wore them due to a shortage of royal blue facemasks. It will be paired with the Cougars’ white road jerseys and pants with royal trim, even though they’re playing at home.
The right side of the helmets features BYU’s Stretch “Y” logo in white above the mountain range, which runs roughly 160 miles through the state of Utah and towers over the east side of Lavell Edwards Stadium
The Stretch “Y” is absent from the left side of the helmet, meanwhile, as the growling cougar takes center stage. A source indicated the asymmetrical design was actually supposed to be two different helmets worn in consecutive seasons, but they were combined into one design instead.
That said, this marks the fourth different helmet design for BYU this season, including a royal blue helmet with a royal blue or gray facemask, a white helmet with navy blue Stretch “Y” logos and a navy blue facemask and a blue-to-black gradient helmet, which made its debut in last weekend’s loss to Notre Dame.
