It’s a blast from the past for the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League, who have brought back a logo from the city’s hockey history for their new alternate jersey.
The affiliate of the New Jersey Devils unveiled the jerseys on social media on Wednesday, December 6. They’re predominantly black, with an updated “U” logo on the front with devil horns and a tail.
A broad red stripe runs around the waist and each sleeve, with black and white stripes over top. The collar is red with a black insert at the front. The jersey is paired with black pants and black socks with the same striping as the sleeves.
The Devil-U logo was first used by the Utica Devils of the AHL between 1987 and 1993, before the franchise left for Saint John, New Brunswick. In that iteration, the red U was outlined in green and had a green circle behind it. This time, the U has black and white outlines, and no circle.
Numbers on the backs and sleeves, as well as player names on the backs, are in a red block font with a white outline. A tonal black New Jersey Devils logo patch appears on both shoulders.
The Comets’ regular jerseys follow the same template as their NHL parent club, with black shoulders on either a white or red base, three stripes around the sleeves and a thin black stripe around the hem.
The current iteration of the Utica Comets moved to the city from Binghamton, New York, in 2021, where they were the Binghamton Devils. They kept the nickname, however, from the previous franchise, which moved to Abbotsford, British Columbia, to become the Canucks.
The Comets also sported both white and red versions of Utica Devils throwback jerseys during the 2022-23 season.
The Comets will wear the black alternates for nine games throughout the rest of the 2023-24 AHL regular season, including:
- Friday, December 8 vs. Bridgeport Islanders
- Saturday, December 16 vs. Syracuse Crunch
- Saturday, December 30 vs. Rochester Americans

- Saturday, January 27 vs. Syracuse Crunch
- Saturday, February 17 vs. Belleville Senators
