The Golden State Warriors will wear a heart-shaped patch on their jerseys for the remainder of the season in honor of late assistant coach Dejan Milojević, who suffered a fatal heart attack during a team dinner on Jan. 17.
The 46-year-old Milojević was in his third season with the Warriors, who tasked him with coaching their power forwards and centers. He helped the franchise win its seventh NBA championship in 2021-22.
Milojević previously enjoyed a 14-season international playing career in his home country of Serbia, where he won three Adriatic League MVP awards (2004-06) and earned the nickname “Serbian Charles Barkley.”
Shortly after retiring, Milojević became the head coach at Serbia’s Mega Basket. He won 173 games and saw 11 players selected in the NBA Draft during his eight-year tenure, including Nikola Jokić and Ivica Zubac.
Milojević also coached in the NBA Summer League with the Atlanta Hawks in 2016, San Antonio Spurs in 2017 and Houston Rockets in 2018, as well as the Montenegrin club Budućnost in 2020-21 before joining the Warriors.
As for the patch, it features Milojević’s initials inside of a heart and will be worn on the left shoulder of Golden State’s jerseys. It will debut in tonight’s game against the Atlanta Hawks (10 p.m. ET on NBCS-BA).
This will mark the Warriors’ first game since Milojević’s passing, as last Wednesday’s matchup at the Utah Jazz and Friday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks were both postponed in the wake of his death.
Additionally, the heart-shaped logo with Milojević’s initials has been added to the court at Chase Center near Golden State’s bench, where it will remain for the rest of the season.
