The Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies will rebrand for a night as the Grumble Pugs. The temporary identity can best be explained by the fact that if you squint hard enough, “Grumble Pugs” is kind of an anagram for “Binghamton Rumble Ponies.”
The nickname was unveiled on social media with a news-style video of a pug rearranging the letters that spell out the team’s name, explaining that a group of pugs is known as a grumbling. The logo features three pugs (technically a grumbling!) holding a bat in their mouths.
This is not the first time that pugs, which are a cross between real dogs and naked mole rats, have appeared on a Minor League Baseball field. In 2019, the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs blamed a typographical error by their general manager Kurt Landes for their temporary IronPugs identity.
The Grumble Pugs will take to the field August 17.
