The Washington Nationals are changing one of their uniforms and then adding a whole new one for the upcoming 2024 Major League Baseball season.
Unveiled this afternoon, we’ll start with the new uniform. The new jersey is an alternate and pullover style rather than a button-up; this is the first pullover jersey in the franchise history of the Montreal Expos-Washington Nationals (aside from that Players Weekend thing).
The top is white with navy blue sleeves with red, white, and blue striping on the cuffs. The neck features a “V” style with the same red/white/blue striping. In the upper left corner of the chest is the club’s alternate “W” Capitol logo, which is also worn on the front of the club’s caps.
On the sleeve is a new logo, an interlocked “DC” logo placed upon a blue map of the District of Columbia.
Note this new jersey is a home alternate jersey. The Nats’ home white jersey from the last few seasons — the one with Nationals scripted across the front — remains untouched and will still be worn as their primary home jersey in 2024.
The back of the jersey uses the Nationals’ usual name and number style, red trimmed in blue for the number, and the player name above it arched in red and blue.
Washington will also be playing with a new road jersey in 2024, replacing the red scripted wordmark across the chest with a more standard navy blue block lettering trimmed in white and red. Red/white/blue trim around the neck and at the end of each sleeve. The Washington Nationals logo remains on the sleeve.
The back of the jersey gives us a blue player name trimmed in red with the number below in red with blue trim — basically the same style as on the front with the team name and number using the same colour patterns.
Though they’re not shown in any of the photos we received, the Nats are also updating their road pant striping to match those on the jerseys.
“The gray jersey and corresponding pants are now trimmed in a tricolour red, white and blue piping, replacing the dual red and blue trim from previous seasons,” said the press release from the team.
Another juicy nugget included in the Nationals uniform news today was that the club has acknowledged they will be dropping their Cherry Blossom City Connect uniforms following the 2024 season. They will still be worn for Friday and Saturday home games this season before they’re retired for good once the season concludes. The Nats introduced the grey uniform with pink cherry blossoms at the beginning of the 2022 season.
The change to the road uniform marks the beginning of the third distinct road jersey design worn by the club since they relocated from Montreal in time for the 2005 season.
Their first road uniform featured an arched WASHINGTON in blue with gold shadowing and red trim; this was changed in 2011 to a style which I liked to pretend was a tribute to the old Montreal Expos road uniforms because… well, they really looked like them! The second style was used right up until the end of this past season.
