Athletics Add Patches For Sacramento, Rickey Henderson For 2025 Season

They may not be wearing their temporary home city’s name on the front of their jerseys, but Major League Baseball’s Athletics are giving Sacramento a shoutout in the form of a sleeve patch.

The team formerly known as the Oakland Athletics — who will be simply known as the Athletics as they they make the transition to their new permanent home in Las Vegas — revealed the patch on their website and social media channels on Friday, January 17, that commemorates the team’s first season in the California capital.

The patch will be placed on the left sleeve of the jersey, replacing the elephant alternate logo that was previously there. It depicts the Tower Bridge in Sacramento, which is visible from the A’s temporary home at Sutter Health Park, in the team’s green and gold color scheme. The bridge architecture appears in a green rectangle with gold trim. A gold “Sacramento” script runs across the bottom of the patch.

Photos and videos that accompanied Friday’s announcement only showed the patch on the Athletics’ white home uniforms and on a trucker hat being given away on Opening Day (March 31).

The Athletics also announced on Friday that they would be wearing another patch on their jerseys for the entire 2025 season honoring the memory of all-time stolen bases leader Rickey Henderson, who passed away in December. No photos of the patch were released, nor any details on where exactly on the jersey it would be placed, but the team said it would prominently feature his “iconic number 24.”

A photo of a rally towel also being given away on Opening Day may give some hints on the design, though. The towel featured a gold circle with green and white outlines and a green “RICKEY 24” with white outlines inside.

In June, Athletics president Dave Kaval told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the team would play with “Athletics” across the front of their jerseys both at home and on the road while playing in Sacramento. But when they introduced new signing Shotaro Morii on Wednesday, January 15, he was presented with a gold jersey with green and white placket striping and an A’s crest on the left chest.

The Athletics play their first game under their new moniker on Thursday, March 27, when they visit the Seattle Mariners. Their home opener in Sacramento takes place on Monday, March 31, when they host the Chicago Cubs.
