Reading Fightin Phils to celebrate Oktoberfest as Prost

The Reading Fightin Phils, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies in the Double-A Eastern League, will pay homage to the nearby Pennsylvania Dutch community as well as the German beer celebration of Oktoberfest when they play a game as the Reading Prost this season. The term Prost, German for “Cheers,” is of course closely associated with Oktoberfest.

The Pennsylvania Dutch community (which is German and not Dutch) dates back to the late 1600s, when immigrants from the Palatinate region of Germany (not the Netherlands) began fleeing to North America to escape religious persecution. The communities maintain their German traditions, food (like soft pretzels), and language to this day.

The logo features a pretzel character wielding a baseball bat with one hand and a stein of beer with the other, while wearing traditional clothing, including a German Alpine hat, lederhosen pants, and wooden clogs (which are Dutch rather than German).

The Fightins will play as the Prost on their last Saturday home game on September 13—not quite October but good enough for a celebration.
