The Amarillo Sod Poodles unveiled a new alternate identity that plays off the city’s nickname as well as a plant that can be found throughout the area as tumbleweed. The geographic signifier Yellow City derives from a translation of Amarillo (Spanish for yellow), a name the city earned because of its golden-colored soil and wildflowers. Pigweed is a common name for a handful of different plants. In the Texas panhandle, it’s a problem for farmers, but it’s iconic as a representation of the area.
The logo, created by Brandiose, features an anthropomorphic feral hog wearing cowboy hats and boots running from a large tumbleweed. Texas has the highest concentration of feral hogs in the United States.
“One thing I love about this new identity is that once again, we have used part of our culture in the panhandle that will not only help to tell the story of West Texas to our fans, but also foster new fans nationwide,” said Sod Poodles President and General Manager Tony Ensor, quoted on MiLB.com. “We think this new family-friendly brand will be a hit for baseball fans across the country.”
The Sod Poodles, Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Texas League, will debut the Pigweeds brand April 27 against the San Antonio Missions.
