Abilene Flying Bison revive classic Prairie Dogs brand

Fresh off their debut season, the collegiate summer level Abilene Flying Bison are reviving a classic brand from their hometown. The team, based in Abilene, Texas, will play Thursday home games in 2025 as the Abilene Prairie Dogs, paying homage to an independent professional team that played in the Texas-Louisiana League from 1995 to 1999, as well as one season in the North American League in 2012.

An updated Prairie Dogs logo, created by the Abilene-based design firm Zachry Associates, features a menacing but still adorable prairie dog character, who in one alternate mark is nibbling on a baseball. The maroon and yellow colors and a slab serif A evoke the original Prairie Dogs logo (below). In a statement, the team said they are honoring that former Prairie Dogs team “and everything they did for the history of baseball in Abilene.”

Prairie Dogs are a kind of ground squirrel (not actually a dog, or even a sod poodle) are found in the grasslands of North America.

The Flying Bison play in the collegiate summer level Mid America League, established just last year.
