Denver NWSL Franchise Asks Fans to Vote on Club Name

Professional women’s soccer is coming to the Mile High City next year, and the ownership group wants to hear from fans on what the team’s name should be.

Denver was awarded the 16th National Women’s Soccer League franchise in late January, and the ownership group has wasted no time soliciting input from fans on the team name.

A poll on the team’s website lists the following six options, along with a write-in field for other suggestions:

  • Denver Peak FC
  • Denver Gold FC
  • Colorado 14ers FC
  • Denver Elevate FC
  • Colorado Summit FC
  • Denver FC

The poll also asks specifically if the team name should represent the city of Denver or the state of Colorado. There’s no indication on the website how long the poll will be open.

Sports fans in Denver have seen a couple of these names before. The Denver Gold were a team in the United States Football League from 1983 to 1985, while the Colorado 14ers were an NBA G League team that played in Broomfield, Colorado, from 2006 to 2009 before moving to Frisco, Texas, and being renamed the Texas Legends.

The term “14er” refers to a mountain peak with an elevation of at least 14,000 feet. There are 53 such mountain peaks in Colorado — more than any other state in the United States.

Denver’s NWSL team will begin play in the 2026 season. The ownership group — which is led by Rob Cohen, chairman and CEO of IMA Financial Group, Inc., a top 25 insurance brokerage headquartered in Denver — is finalizing plans for a purpose-built women’s soccer stadium and a dedicated performance facility for female athletes.
